  • Dental examination
  • X-rays
  • Preventive dental care
  • Crown, bridge or implant at the back of the mouth
  • Teeth whitening and other cosmetic dental care
  • Orthodontic treatment

For these treatments, the standard high-cost protection and dental care allowance continue to apply as usual.

How Sweden’s dental care support works

General dental care allowance (ATB)

From the age of 65, you receive SEK 600 per year to use towards dental care. The allowance is deducted directly from your bill and can be saved for up to two years.

Special dental care allowance (STB)

SEK 600 every six months for preventive dental care if you have an illness or disability that affects your dental health.

Standard high-cost protection

You pay the full reference price up to SEK 3,000, then 50% up to SEK 15,000 and 15% of any amount above that.

Frequently asked questions

No. The enhanced high-cost protection with special dental care reimbursement cannot be used for treatments included in a dental care subscription.

The reference prices are taken from the Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency’s (TLV) regulation HSLF-FS 2025:68, effective from 1 January 2026. For treatments covered by the enhanced dental high-cost protection, the clinic may not charge more than the reference price.

You pay 10% of the reference price for eligible treatments. If the clinic’s price is lower than the reference price, you pay 10% of the lower price. For treatments that are not included, such as examinations and X-rays, the standard high-cost protection applies.

Everyone registered as a resident in Sweden is entitled to the support from the year they turn 67. You do not need to apply—your dentist can see your eligibility automatically and deduct the reimbursement from your bill.
